If this agent is not installed, the default network diagnostics are available. Use the "Dell PowerEdge Installation and Server Management" CD (Version 4.x) to install Intel PROSet or you can download Intel PROSet from the Dell Support website at "support.dell.com". Intel PROSet is listed under "Intel PRO Family of Adapters". See the "Service and Diagnostic Utilities" CD for more information. ###################################################################### RELEASE HIGHLIGHTS ###################################################################### * Added support for PowerEdge X6XX and X7XX systems (Memory and DRAC 3 diagnostics are not supported). * Added support for PowerEdge SC1430, SC440, 840, 860, and 1900. * Added support for SLES 10 EM64T. * Added support for PowerVault 124T Autoloader (LTO2-LC, DLT VS160 and LTO3) and PowerVault ML6000 Autoloader (LTO2 & LTO3). * "Network Communication Test" is enhanced. "Network Team Test" is now supported on Linux. * USB package has a new test: "Overcurrent Alert Test." "Node Detection Test" is enabled on EHCI nodes. * GUI has enhancements for test-warning. Test status tab now shows overall progress and elapsed time. CLI has a details=true option. * SAS Diagnostic Package has three new tests: Controller TTY Log Test, Controller Self Test, and Disk Blink Test * Changer Automation test is split into two separate tests: Slot to Slot Test and Slot to Drive test for ADIC Library. Quick Test mode is also available for these two tests. * There is an option in CLI to run tests for 999 passes * Broadcom Diagnostic tests are not supported in this release ###################################################################### SETUP ###################################################################### * On Enterprise Linux (Red Hat or SUSE), unzip the tar.gz file to a desired location. The extracted files contain an install script (install.sh) and some Red Hat Package Manager (RPM) packages. Install the RPM packages using install.sh. srvadmin-hapi component fails to install if your system does not have the minimum version of OpenIPMI required by srvadmin-hapi OR if your system does not support IPMI (for example: PowerEdge SC420, SC430, and SC1420.) If IPMI is supported on your system, install OpenIPMI from the System Management CD (by running ./srvadmin-openipmi.sh from srvadmin/linux/supportscripts directory). You can also download OpenIPMI from "support.dell.com". All the files needed to run PowerEdge Diagnostics are extracted to the default install directory, /opt/dell/pediags. In the pediags directory, run startDiags.sh from an X session to launch the GUI application. For uninstalling the application, run uninstall.sh which can be found in the install directory. WARNING: Installing srvadmin-hapi or srvadmin-omilcore separately (using rpm command) fails on all SC platforms. Some SC platforms like SC420, SC430, and SC1420 do not support IPMI. so, Memory and DRAC 5 diagnostics are unavailable on those systems. * On Windows, launch the "exe" package downloaded from "support.dell.com" or from the "Dell PowerEdge Service and Diagnostic Utilities" CD. Select a directory where you want the extracted files to reside. All of the files needed to run the application are extracted to the selected directory. To run the GUI application, launch the "PowerEdge Diagnostics GUI" shortcut from Start -> Programs -> PowerEdge Diagnostics 2.7. * To run the application in CLI mode while using both Microsoft Windows and Red Hat Enterprise Linux, run pediags from /oldiags/bin, which should be the current working directory. Additionally, for Windows a shortcut ("PowerEdge Diagnostics CLI") to launch the CLI console is available from Start -> Programs -> PowerEdge Diagnostics 2.7 ###################################################################### INSTALLATION/UNINSTALLATION REQUIREMENTS ###################################################################### * The PowerEdge Diagnostics GUI, which is a 32-bit application, does not function on Red Hat Enterprise Linux for Intel EM64T (RHEL EM64T) systems if Compatibility Arch Support packages are missing. Your RHEL EM64T system may display the following message when you try launching PowerEdge Diagnostics: "Compatibility Arch Support package(s) [gtk, pango, and redhat-artwork] is not installed on this system. For details on installing the package(s) please refer to the README file." To resolve the issue, perform the following actions: 1. Run Red Hat Package Management Utility ("redhat-config-packages") 2. Select the "Compatibility Arch support" checkbox in the "Package Management" window and click "Details". 3. A new window ("Compatibility Arch Support Details") is displayed. 4. Make sure the following packages are selected for installation from the new window and click "Close": gtk, pango, and redhat-artwork. 5. Click the "Update" button in the "Package Management" window. NOTE: For Red Hat Enterprise Linux Version 3, ensure that update 4 is running before you install the Compatibility Arch Support packages. You cannot upgrade to update 4 from update 2 with Compatibility Arch Support package(s) [gtk, pango, and redhat-artwork] already installed. * Installation of Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics requires a minimum free space of 40 MB on your system drive (C: on Windows or /opt on Linux). * Uninstallation of Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics requires a minimum free space of 40 KB on your system drive. ###################################################################### USER NOTES ###################################################################### This section provides information to help enhance your experience with PowerEdge Diagnostics in particular implementations and environments. * For a complete list of hardware devices that PowerEdge Diagnostics supports, see the "Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics User's Guide." * PowerEdge Diagnostics provides diagnostics for the following Dell-supplied hardware devices: - CD drives - DVD drives - CD-RW/DVD combination drives - Diskette drives - NICs - Modems - Dell Remote Access Cards (DRAC 4 and DRAC 5) - USB Controller - SCSI controllers - RAID controllers - See the list in the "PowerEdge Diagnostics User's Guide" or refer to the section, "Notes for RAID Controllers" below. - Hard drives - CMOS - Parallel ports - Serial ports - PCI buses - Tape drives- See the list in the "PowerEdge Diagnostics User's Guide" or refer to the section "Notes for Tape Drives, Autoloaders, and Libraries" below. - Tape arrays, autoloaders, and libraries - See the specific list in the "PowerEdge Diagnostics User's Guide" or refer to the section "Notes for Tape Drives, Autoloaders, and Libraries" below. - Memory DIMMs - SAS Controllers * CD/DVD tests are not supported on Virtual CD devices. * Do not run diagnostics simultaneously on multiple tape devices. In addition, do not run diagnostic tests simultaneously with the SCSI communication tests. For example, if you run diagnostic tests simultaneously for a PowerVault 122T autoloader and a VS80 tape drive, one of the tests may fail with the following message: "The DLL required to run the diagnostic is currently being used by another device. Retry the diagnostic after ensuring that the DLL is not being used by other devices." * Ensure that all tape backup services are stopped prior to executing tape diagnostics. Having tape backup services running while executing tape diagnostics may cause unpredictable behavior. The device may show unknown status when enumerated. * It is strongly recommends that you maintain the latest versions of the RAID controller driver and firmware. Otherwise, unpredictable application behavior may occur. * You need Administrator privileges on your operating system to run diagnostics tests using PowerEdge Diagnostics. * Do not extract and copy this application to another directory for execution purposes. Running this application on a read-only file system is also not supported. * The Diagnostic Service is designed to diagnose problems on individual systems. Problems that occur on the network level are not addressed unless the problem resides with a NIC on a single system. * The hard drive diagnostics are designed to run as a low-priority background task to limit the effect of their activity on other hard-drive I/O activity. It is recommended that you limit drive activity while you are running the hard-drive diagnostics. The diagnostics may run slowly or even stop when other hard-drive I/O activity is running simultaneously. The diagnostics resume when the hard-drive I/O activity decreases. * PowerEdge Diagnostics runs concurrently with all the other applications that are running on the system being tested. As a result, additional system load occurs and could impact system and application performance. If you are running critical applications that require rapid response or consume significant system resources, take appropriate precautions before running Diagnostics. Close all non-essential applications and run diagnostics only during non-peak hours of system use. * Running multiple instances of PowerEdge Diagnostics is not supported. * Ensure that only Dell-supported USB devices are present in your system before running PowerEdge Diagnostics. Disconnect any unsupported devices, if they are present. See the "PowerEdge Diagnostics User's Guide" for a complete list of supported devices. * Running the Dell OpenManage(TM) Server Administrator Diagnostic Service and PowerEdge Diagnostics simultaneously is not supported. * An OHCI Controller limits the amount of power supplied to a bus powered hub. If the bus-powered hub has a large number of devices attached to it, the OHCI Controller does not configure them for usage and declares the particular hub as unknown. As a result, your operating system too does not detect the over current condition and reports the hub as an unknown device. An EHCI controller, however, provides sufficient power to such a hub and in doing so it gets information about the over current condition. The operating system detects the over current condition and reports it properly.(DF68933) * On unsupported configurations, the memory device status is not shown, and the Memory Pattern Test is unavailable. ====================================================================== NOTES FOR RAID CONTROLLERS ====================================================================== NOTE: Install Dell-qualified device drivers and firmware to run diagnostics on RAID controllers and RAID-attached hard drives. The tests may produce unexpected results. * During the Autoloader Self-test, the Tape Device Self-test displays a warning (Data on the media will be destroyed!) at the start. This message applies specifically to tape drives and is not valid for Autoloaders. * If you disable a network adapter and then enable it, or if you run diagnostics and restart PowerEdge Diagnostics, the NICs may not be available in the "Select Test(s) to Run" tree. It takes approximately 30 seconds for the adapter to return to an active state. If you start PowerEdge Diagnostics immediately after one of these situations, the diagnostic tests will not be listed. The workaround is to wait approximately 30 seconds before you start PowerEdge Diagnostics. * You may get unexpected results on disconnecting the USB cable while you are running a diskette test on a USB diskette drive. On systems running Red Hat Enterprise Linux products, the operating system may stop responding. On systems running Windows, the test may never complete. * Running NIC diagnostics which disconnect the network may also cause a Server Administrator user session to be logged out and disruption of applications that require or use a network connection. See the Diagnostics online help for details on NIC diagnostics behavior. * Running multiple NIC diagnostics together may result in NIC Communication Test producing unexpected results. This is because some diagnostic tests disconnect the network. * Parallel port diagnostics support only base address 0x378h. * If you are using a Mozilla browser to view the XML files created by the "Save Configuration" or "Save Results" option, the corners of the HTML file may be distorted. * In versions of the Mozilla browser earlier than 1.2, the HTML file generated from the XML file may not be viewable at all. * You need to start a fresh session of PowerEdge Diagnostics after installing the DELL components required by PowerEdge Diagnostics, to take advantage of the new installation. * Diagnostics service may enumerate PERC 3/Di controller and attached disks although OMSS is uninstalled from the Managed Node. It is recommended to install OMSS before running diagnostics on PERC 3/Di. * Running diagnostic tests on unsupported tape drives on Dell servers might produce unexpected or erroneous results. Refer to the Dell Support website at "support.dell.com" for a list of supported tape drives for Dell servers. * Diagnostics service may enumerate PERC 3/Di controller and attached disks although OMSS is uninstalled from Managed Node. It is recommended to install OMSS before running diagnostics on PERC 3/Di. * Running diagnostic tests on unsupported tape drives on Dell servers might produce unexpected or erroneous results. Refer to the Dell Support website at "support.dell.com" for a list of supported tape drives for Dell servers. * The Virtual Media test will not pass if the POST Results test is executed prior to it. This is due to the POST Result test disconnecting all open RAC sessions. * In CLI, if you abort a diagnostic test, the test results may not appear in some scenarios. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUES FOR WINDOWS OPERATING SYSTEMS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * After running PowerEdge Diagnostics, the following errors are logged in the Event Viewer System Log by the Removable Storage Service. "Type: Error, Source: DCOM" "Type: Error, Source: Removable Storage Service" These entries are logged because the PowerEdge Diagnostics stops the Removable Storage Service to scan the system for tape devices on which to perform diagnostics. After performing the scan, the Removable Storage Service restarts. * Do not use special characters in the folder path while installing PowerEdge Diagnostics. CLI commands do not work if the application install path contains special characters like '#' or '%'. * If you start the PowerEdge Diagnostics immediately after installing any driver, the tests may not be available in the "Select Test(s) to Run" tree. It takes sometime for the driver to get installed completely. The workaround is to wait for sometime before you start PowerEdge Diagnostics. * If the floppy medium is ejected while executing diagnostic tests on a USB floppy drive, you may not be able to stop the drive using the "Safely Remove Hardware" feature from the Windows system tray. * On Windows 2003 Small Business Server with bus powered devices having multiple USB CD and Floppy drives, an extra device (without tests) may be shown. If supported, connect an external power supply to this hub. Allow sufficient time for the operating system to detect all hot-plugged USB devices and launch the PowerEdge Diagnostics GUI. (DF66461) * RAC Virtual Media test fails with an error message "Unable to find Virtual Floppy," on Windows operating systems installed on Dell PowerEdge Systems running Dell Remote Access Controller 5. This error situation occurs only when the operating system is rebooted after the floppy drive is virtualized from another system. (DF72396) * When the Usbhub.sys driver (File version: 5.0.2195.6689, timestamp: June 18, 2006) for Windows 2000 Advanced Server SP4 detects an Over Current condition at a hub port, as an Over Current protection policy, the driver issues a removal request to that device. All device information belonging to that device is released in the Kernel If USB Over Current Alert test is run at this time, it passes without displaying a warning message, as the Usbhub.sys driver clears the Over Current condition before the test is executed. (DF72902) * When there are a large number of handles open - due to services like Microsoft Exchange, IIS, SQL, Telnet, FTP, Windows and Internet Name Service running simultaneously on Windows Small Business Server 2003 - and when diagnostic tests are queued multiple times, PowerEdge Diagnostics may terminate unexpectedly. ---------------------------------------------------------------------- ISSUES FOR ENTERPRISE LINUX OPERATING SYSTEMS ---------------------------------------------------------------------- * Running the CD/DVD Read Exerciser test on a corrupt CD medium or on a faulty drive may cause the test to run for a longer than normal duration, and PowerEdge Diagnostics may appear to hang. To resolve this issue, terminate PowerEdge Diagnostics and try running the test again in the Quick Test mode. * The Intel NIC description may have some extra trailing characters on the Diagnostics selection page on systems running the Red Hat Enterprise Linux operating system. This does not impact the NIC functionality. * When the network services are stopped and if the adapter is not configured for Wake-on-LAN (WOL) or Manageability, the PHY is powered off. When Intel Offline Test is executed in this scenario, it fails. Since the test powers on the PHY and enables WOL, the test passes next time onwards. * Connecting or removing USB or CD/DVD devices from Red Hat Enterprise Linux systems, while the enumeration is in progress, may cause the system to hang. (141704) * The PowerEdge Diagnostics GUI may behave unpredictably when it is run from an ssh-client on Red Hat Enterprise Linux version 4. To resolve the issue, use ssh with -Y option ("Enable Trusted X11 forwarding") when running the GUI. (141497) * If tapeware is installed, the Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics application may fail to start. If that happens, please delete the softlink entry /lib/libstdc++-libc6.2-2.so.3 and restart the Dell PowerEdge Diagnostics application to make it work. Please check with the Tapeware support team for fix to this issue. * ICH7R IDE controllers are not supported. Running tests on this controller or the devices connected to it may cause unexpected behavior. * When you run a SCSI Communication test, on a channel that has an LTO3 tape drive connected to it and perform a backup simultaneously using 'tar commands', the backup operation may fail. Ensure that backup or restore operations are not in progress before running the SCSI Communication test. * When the Yosemite backup software is installed on a system that has a tape changer, SCSI Communication tests and tape tests may fail. Ensure that the Yosemite backup software service is stopped before running these tests." * The Tape Self Test writes to and advances the tape media during execution. Manual erase operations using the Linux command "mt -f /dev/stX erase", if executed immediately after the Tape Self Test execution, will fail with an I/O error. To avoid this error condition always rewind the tape media after running the Tape Self Test. * ICH7R IDE controllers are not supported. Running tests on this controller or the devices connected to it may cause unexpected behavior. * When a non-root user uses "su" to become superuser (root), some tests may not work in the CLI, when the pediags command is run. User should use "su -" to become the super user to run the pediags command. * On Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4.0, when SELinux (Security Enhanced Linux) is enabled and you run network diagnostics on console - some warning messages appear indicating a violation of policy. * On SuSE Enterprise Server 10, with ArpArmor enabled and when you run network diagnostics on console - some warning messages appear indicating a violation of policy. * Multiple USB devices, when connected to a deep hierarchy of bus powered USB Hubs, cause the Linux USB device driver sub-system to become unresponsive.
