********************** This document describes the installation procedure for the Dell® Component Instrumentation Policy for HP OpenView ManageX (hereafter referred to as Dell Policy). Dell Policy is delivered as part of the Dell OpenManage(TM) product. Dell Policy is supported on the Special Edition (SE) and the full versions of the HP OpenView ManageX product (version 3.5 and later). Hereafter, all references to HP OpenView ManageX refer to both versions of the product. Dell Component Instrumentation Policy Provisions ================================================================= Dell Policy provides a means of monitoring the Microsoft® Windows NT® event log for occurrences of component instrumentation events. The policy induces both an HP OpenView ManageX console message and a Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) trap for each event that you monitor. You can monitor these component instrumentation events from your HP OpenView ManageX management console or from your HP OpenView NNM console. Installing the Dell Component Instrumentation Policy for HP OpenView ManageX ================================================================= To install Dell Policy, perform the following steps: 1. Locate the Dell Policy file, DellCI.mxe. 2. Create a new folder called "Dell Policies" under the Policies subdirectory. NOTE: To find the name of the directory where your HP OpenView ManageX software is installed, right-click the ManageX icon and point to Properties--> Shortcut. The shortcut information displays the directory location. 3. Copy the DellCI.mxe file into the new Dell Policies subdirectory of the HP OpenView ManageX directory structure. You can now install Dell Policy on your managed node. 4. Select the node(s) on which to install the Dell Policy by using the ManageX Device Selector. 5. From the ManageX management console, locate Dell Policy in the Available Policies folder. Install the policy according to the HP OpenView ManageX installation instructions (on the right side of the window, right-click the policy and select Task--> Install). Known Issues ========================================================== If your managed node is running HIP 3.3 or an earlier version and a fan enclosure is removed (event ID 331) or a fan enclosure is replaced (event ID 332), the following console message appears: "Cannot retrieve the message for this event id: The system can not find the file specified." Monitored Events ========================================================== The following events are monitored: Temperature failure - Indicates a temperature failure threshold has been exceeded Temperature failure normal - Indicates the temperature has returned to normal below the failure threshold Temperature warning - Indicates a temperature warning threshold has been exceeded Temperature warning normal - Indicates the temperature has returned to normal below the warning threshold Voltage failure - Indicates a voltage failure threshold has been exceeded Voltage failure normal - Indicates the voltage has returned to normal below the failure threshold Voltage warning - Indicates a voltage warning threshold has been exceeded Voltage warning normal - Indicates the voltage has returned to normal below the warning threshold Fan failure - Indicates a fan failure threshold has been exceeded Fan failure normal - Indicates the fan has returned to normal below the failure threshold Fan warning - Indicates a fan warning threshold has been exceeded Fan warning normal - Indicates the fan has returned to normal below the warning threshold Amp failure - Indicates an amp failure threshold has been exceeded Amp failure normal - Indicates the amp has returned to normal below the failure threshold Amp warning - Indicates an amp warning threshold has been exceeded Amp warning normal - Indicates the amp has returned to normal below the warning threshold Power supply lost redundancy - Indicates that there is no longer a redundant power supply Power supply regained redundancy - Indicates that the power supply situation is redundant Power supply degraded - Indicates that a power supply is failing Power supply degraded normal - Indicates that the power supply has returned to normal function Power supply failure - Indicates that a power supply threshold has been exceeded Power supply failure normal - Indicates that a power supply has returned to normal below the failure threshold Chassis open - Indicates chassis intrusion (that is, the chassis has been opened) Chassis closed - Indicates that the chassis has been closed Example of a Monitored Event =========================================================== A typical temperature probe monitors the backplane of a server. This probe is a piece of instrumentation that is standard in a Dell PowerEdge server. A warning threshold might be set to a minimum temperature of 2.5 degrees Celsius and a maximum temperature of 47.5 degrees Celsius. These thresholds are configured through the Dell OpenManage Server Console. If the backplane temperature reaches 48 degrees Celsius, an event is generated by the Dell Baseboard Agent and logged to the event log. Dell Policy recognizes this event and sends a console event to the ManageX management console and sends an SNMP trap to the configured destination. To configure the SNMP trap destination, run the trapdest utility that is supplied with the HP OpenView ManageX product.
